People's Park in the Sky (Tagaytay)

A 45 minute drive from Manila, Tagaytay offers a breath taking view

Originally named as “Palace in the Sky” during the Marcos presidency, it is now a park with ruins and has been re-named as the “People’s Park in the Sky.”

Sitting on the highest portion of Mt. Sungay in Tagaytay, people are attracted to this old mansion not because of its physical structure but because of the view it can offer.

On a clear day, one can see the Taal lake on the south, the Laguna lake (one of the largest lakes in southeast Asia) on the east, and Manila on the north.

Now, the mansion serves as a reminder of affluence and extravagance during the dictatorship and is a popular tourist destination for both locals and foreigners. This palace was supposed to host ex- US President Ronald Reagan and his entourage; however, it did not materialize due to the political situation and turmoil in the early 80’s. The Marcos’s were later ousted by a popular revolt known all over the world as the People Power of 1986.

With its colorful past, I must say it’s worth the drive to this highest point on the Tagaytay ridge. Enjoy the view!
